Knowing the Profiles

Casement windows (openable window) provide good ventilation when exposed outside.  Likewise, in closed condition, it enhances sound insulation, protection from dust and minimal thermal loss compared to sliding windows.

Following Profiles are required to make a uPVC Casement Window:

  1. Casement frame
  2. Casement window sash
  3. Casement Mullion (T-shaped or Z-shaped)
  4. Glazing bead (single / double)

The Hardware used in a Casement Window are:

  • Casement Espagnolette & Strikers
  • Espagnolette Handle
  • Friction Hinge (side / top hung types)
  • Concealed or Butt Hinge (for heavy duty application) with Restriction Arm.

The Parameters Determining the Performance of a Casement Window are:

  1. Fabrication size should be 5-6 mm less than the cavity size.
  2. Overlap between frame and Sash should be a minimum of 8 mm.
  3. Specified Steel reinforcements (shape and thickness) provide required system rigidity to avoid deflection of the sash.  If the window sash deflects more than 2 mm, the locking function will be affected.
  4. When the sash is closed, the TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) gasket should get compressed to 3.5 mm to ensure perfect sealing between the frame and sash.  When the frame / sash gets welded, the TPE gaskets also get welded ensuring totally leak-proof corners.  TPE is UV resistant and can withstand harsh climatic conditions.  Gasket material quality is very important to ensure durability
  5. In a closed condition, the clearance between the Espagnolette Handle (fixed to the sash) and the frame will be in the range of 3-4 mm if the base width of Espagnolette Handle is 17 – 18 mm.  This clearance is essential to ensure that the Gasket is not damaged during the opening / closing operation of the window sash.
  6. Friction Hinges are recommended for Casement windows, and need to ensure that the right size is used considering the window size.  Friction Hinges come with stack height of 13 / 14 mm and 15 / 16 mm.  Stack height selection based on the system requirement is very important to ensure smooth operation.
  7. The backset of Casement Espagnolette is 22 mm for most of the UPVC systems.  Accordingly, the triple hole drilling and window sash routing to be done for assembling of Casement Espagnolette and Casement Handle.  By using 22 mm backset Casement Espagnolette, the clearance between frame and sash will be maintained in the range of 3-4 mm.
  8. Plastic parts such as Cavity locking block and Casement Wedge to be used to maintain alignment of the window sash in closed condition.
  9. Silicone sealant – Neutral cure type for external application and Acrylic sealant (paintable) for internal application should be used.
  10. While glazing the sash, suitable Glazing packers to be used to ensure that glass is fully secured in glazed condition.
