We explain how problems can be tackled. This post also deals with lesser known facts that could be an eye-opener for your business.

Material Challenges:

  • Though the uPVC industry is more than 2-decades old in India, majority of the hardware continues to be imported from European and Asian countries.
  • The humid climate in coastal areas and tropical conditions warrants high quality hardware for the local markets.  Metal fittings such as Espagnolettes (also known as Transmission rods) are made out of Carbon steel with zinc plating. But it is not good enough to possess the required corrosion resistance.
  • The plated metal part needs to be subjected to sealant treatment to withstand salt spray test of 480 hours and above.  Most of the manufacturers are not equipped to do so and depend on imports.
  • Handles of various kinds used in uPVC systems are made out of Zinc alloy or Aluminium alloy.  Virgin material needs to be used to avoid product failure.
  • Friction Hinges used in Casement windows are made out of Stainless steel grade SS430/SS202 (Ferritic steel) and SS304 (Austenitic steel).  Ferritic steel is magnetic and Austenitic steel is non-magnetic. While SS430/SS202 is suitable for dry climates, SS304 is a must for coastal areas.  SS304 is almost double the price of SS430/SS202 and as a result of this, there is a tendency of not going with SS304 in coastal areas resulting in rusting of the hinges / product failure.  For fixing Friction Hinges, it is absolutely necessary to use Stainless steel screws (SS410) to meet high torque requirement and corrosion resistance. Carbon steel screws with zinc plating should not be used because it would catch rust fast and these screws cannot withstand high torque requirement and easily prone to rusting.

Product Challenges:

  • Due to easy availability of imported brands in India, advanced manufacturing technology is at a low level.
  • Lack of technical knowledge and large scale companies in India are unable to produce uPVC hardware.
  • Most of the Indian players have developed their own expertise which is not on par with European technology.
  • High cost of production in India which deters the manufacturers to adopt the systems to make hardware.
